When I first heard this song on an episode of Without a Trace I had to find out who it was. This was harder than I thought. I was thrown off by the Dianne MaCaulley vocals so I was shocked to find out it was Moby. Such a pretty song by him! I didn’t see that one coming.
At first I thought it was the driving click of the high hat that made the song so moving. But maybe it was the extensive lyrics that Moby had sweated over for countless minutes.
One of these mornings, won’t be very long
You will look for me and I’ll be gone
Wow. How do they do that live? Who can remember all the words? They must use a teleprompter. But really, that’s what gets it stuck in your head and makes it so cool.
It starts with that driving high hat, click-click-click. It’s like a clock foreshadowing the time. Then you hear the strong, soulful voice of MaCaulley telling you she’ll be gone and that’s it. No why, just gone. Is she dying? Is it something he did to her? Is it something she did? Does she just not like the mailman? That is all up to your mind. As her voice fades out the instruments drift off one by one we are left only with that high hat clicking away, the clock telling us that time is still going on.
I sleep (when I sleep) with the TV on and that high hat wakes me up every time that song comes on even before the vocals start and I’ll just lay there knowing that sound will be stuck in my head all day and I’ll end up walking around all day fill with the same intense resolve that MaCaulley sings with. And just so you know, Jack does find the little abducted girl in that episode of Without a Trace.
